I took 2 of my 3 bulls to market at Emory on April 6th, 2024. I couldn’t take the 3rd because I couldn’t get them all in the trailer.
The older bull, Blue’s calf, originally #16 (but the tag came out of his ear) was born on June 30th, 2022 and was 21 months old. He weighed 830 lbs and got a price of 140.00 hundredweight (dollars per hundred pounds.) He earned me $1,162.00.
The younger bull, #18, was born August 15th, 2022 to Dusty and so was 19 months old. He weighed 700 lbs and was sold at 130.00 hundredweight, for a price of $910.00.
There were about $82 in fees, including $67 in commissions, $6 of insurance, $2 for brand inspection, $4 for the beef referendum, and $3 chute fee.
Overall, the price is what I expected. The weights, however, were much less than I wanted. I thought at least one of my bulls, if not both, would’ve been close to 1,000 lbs after nearly 2 years on grass.
I need to figure out how to get more weight on my cows and calves with the grass I have!
