Weekly Reports

Weather

We had a big storm on 3/4 that destroyed my neighbor’s barn. The roof panels blew all over my field. On 3/8 we got over 2″ of rain.

Temperatures were wild, almost up to 90 F.

Grass Growth

Although the grass was starting to grow, I still fed hay to the animals. There wasn’t enough grass to support the animals and wouldn’t be until around mid April.

Breeding Sheep

I turned the rams on to the ewes on 3/1, hoping to see lambs around July 26th. I had planned to introduce 4 ewes a day but that was not possible with my setup. If I am going to do that I need a way to physically secure the ewes and transport them, since they have a very strong instinct to stay together.

The ram was not physically the healthiest, but I have a backup ram that should do just fine. I was finally able to trim his hooves and his health improved a ton. The abscess was completely healed even though there was still muck in his hair coat where it was. He got pinkeye but recovered just fine.

Baby chicks!

I got baby chicks, Barred Rock, on 3/21.

Pneumonia

One of my cows died of pneumonia in late March. Since I don’t use antibiotics there’s really nothing to do but hope she gets better. She didn’t.
