Monday 5/5
It sprinkled all day on Monday.
Tuesday 5/6
We got over 2″ of rain.
Another 1/75″ of rain. Now the field is a swamp.
Wednesday 5/7
I try to switch the dogs out every week. One week the female dogs are penned up and the male dogs roam free, and the next the females roam and the males are penned up.
Regarding sheep tags, I have a few options. Greg Judy doesn’t tag. I could use bigger tags that I can read, especially on the ewes. I don’t think I’ll tag the lambs anymore, though.
Thursday 5/8
I was able to catch the lamb with the long hoof and I trimmed it back. It was hoof rot, and pretty bad. I wrapped it up after trimming and applying blood stop and hoofcure.
Friday 5/9
Because of what i saw in the lamb yesterday, I decided to pen up all the sheep on Saturday and look at each of their hooves. I am seeing a lot of lameness, which is an indicator of hoof rot and scald along with other issues. We’ve had warm weather with wet ground which is the worst combination.
Saturday 5/10
Today is the day. I penned up the sheep and worked on them for several hours. I had lots of help which made it go fast. In the end, half the sheep were perfectly fine. A good number had minor hoof scald, which I treated with copper sulfate solution. Several others had longer hooves, some of which I trimmed. There were about 5 cases of hoof rot which I treated.
