It’s Thursday morning on March 30th, 2023 and I just moved the cows to the last cell of the last row of this rotation. This is the infamous “Boneyard” where I dump the dead animals. I’ve had two cows die on my field, and several calves. This is where the bones end up. The two… Continue reading The last cell before the move

Starting another rotation
It’s Thursday evening on March 30th 2023, and that means it’s time to start a new rotation. This rotation will be rows of 425′ by 1000′. We will move the cows from west to east 7 times, twice a day, so 1 week will take 2 rows. The field is 2560′ long so we will… Continue reading Starting another rotation
Drought Removal Likely
In the next month (October 2022) it looks like the drought condition will be removed from Hopkins County. We had a significant rain on our land, 5″, last Monday, about 10 days ago. Since then we’ve had a little rain here and there. Yesterday I recorded 1/4″ which is nice. The forecast is rain pretty… Continue reading Drought Removal Likely
2022 August Month in Review
These are the first videos I started uploading to YouTube. The last time we got rain was in June (I think), and we are in a bad drought. We got 5″ of rain on the 22nd but then it didn’t rain for a long time afterwards. Last year there was a bad drought too so… Continue reading 2022 August Month in Review
Friday August 26, 2022
There is starting to be more grass in the field, but it’s still not quite what we need. A good rain should help the grass mature nicely. I found a strange yellow flower in the field that I have yet to identify. If you know what it is, let me know. I took the kids… Continue reading Friday August 26, 2022
Drought Condition for Hopkins County TX
The U.S. Drought Monitor Conditions have improved. We were in Extreme Drought (D3) but we are not in Moderate Drought (D1). What is “Moderate Drought”? If you look at my land, it means my ponds have water, the soil is damp, but things are not growing yet like they should.
A Pretty Day
Thursday August 25, 2022 8 AM: The weather was cool in the mid 70s, but very humid. I cleaned out my side-by-side, collecting the bits that were worth saving, throwing away the rest. I sprayed down the back and in the process got sprayed myself. The food that has spilled rots and makes a horrible… Continue reading A Pretty Day
Barking Dogs and an Evening Stroll
Rather than ride the side-by-side out to see the cows, I decided to just hike out there. Our property is 1000′ wide (more or less) so it’s not a long walk. Along the way, my dog Toby (an Australian Cattle Dog / Red Heeler mix) decided it would be time to herd the cows. The… Continue reading Barking Dogs and an Evening Stroll
Keeping Cows out of the Poultry Pen
The cows were crossing the poultry netting and likely eating the chicken and duck feed. They also left some giant cow patties. We set up a perimeter fence and chase the cows out. They know to respect the fence.
Moving the Cows 1/2 Miles
It was finally time to move the cows from the back of the pasture to the front. It’s a long walk as our property is 2,560′ long — exactly 1/2 mile. It’s hot, but we get it done.
