Overview
This rotation is set to be a 21-day or 3-week rotation. I have the property divided into 6 rows of 426′ each. My field is 2560′ long so that leaves 10′ extra for the last row.
I have already put down markers every 100′ along both sides of the property to guide me.
Row 1: 0′-400′, 3/30-4/2
You’ll note that this is 400′, not 425′. I had setup the wire at 400′ earlier, and I didn’t want to change it at this time.
Thursday Evening
We had two goals moving the cows to the first cell of the first row: get the cows where they needed to be, and get the two stray bull calves where they needed to be.
The move wasn’t easy. We setup a crosswire 25′ from the west fence in the bull row from 800′ to 1275′. We moved the two bull calves into their area on the eastern 975′. The 25′ on the western part was for moving cows.
At first we tried to herd the two bull calves along the fence line but they turned to go back to the cow herd. We decided to let the two bulls merge with the herd for the move, and then sort them out later.
Sorting went pretty quick. For the most part the cows respected the wire. Two heifer calves crossed the wire to be with the bulls, but they were easy enough to get back. Once we had the bulls in, we opened up the southern wire to let the cows all through, and then put them in position.
All in all, it took us a little over an hour and a half to move the cows. This included setting up a wire at 1275′.
